Backup is important – that’s what we are told ever since we got our computers and smartphones. Backup is important, but even more important is to have the right backup.
Imagine having an office. Once a day you copy all your data to an external HDD. It is backup right? It will protect you in the event your motherboard / SSD dies. But it won’t in case your office burns down.
Now take this example and scale it to the cloud. You have a VPS on DigitalOcean. It is hosted in Frankfurt (for instance). You regularly snapshot this VPS.
But wait, the snapshots are on the same data center!
Not too long ago, OVH had a fire destroy a chunk of their French data center. Some of the websites were down for weeks. Some never came back. Even the French government had websites on this data center.
To avoid such a calamity, you need to make sure your snapshots are available in another data center, preferably one far away from your regular data center. This way, if disaster strikes, you can move the copy to any data center and deploy your server back in a few clicks.
We’ve designed replication to a second data center to be a basic part of Cloud Snapshots. You can set the target data center per droplet, and each day a transfer will be initiated to all snapshots – to become available also in the secondary data center.
Now you can really sleep well at night!
